Foods to Avoid When Drinking

Well howdy-do BeerRightNow-ers.  Today’s lesson is on what NOT to eat when you are enjoying a night of drinking.  Drinking is sort of like being under the influence of (medicinal, of course) inhalants; it gives you the munchies.  Don’t get us wrong, it is good to snack while drinking because it slows the absorption of alcohol, but some snacks just need to avoided all together.  Number 3 will probably make you cry.

1. Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits have acids in them that aggravate your GI tract when alcohol is already in there stirring things up.  Unless you want a serious case of acid indigestion or heartburn, steer clear.  This is not to say that you can’t indulge in the biting of a lime wedge when drinking tequila, just don’t eat the lime plain.

2. Anything Salty

Alcohol already makes it easy to become dehydrated (hence why you should drink water AND alcohol) but you just complicate things even more when you add salty foods.  In other words, save the pretzels for another day. Plus salty tastes make you thirstier and chances are you aren’t going to reach for the water when there are cocktails left.

3. Pizza

Yes, I know.  Your go-to snack is not allowed! :( It’s ok.  Pizza has marinara sauce that can upset your tummy.  The LAST thing you want is to be drunk with indigestion, heart burn, or an upset tummy.

4. Greasy foods

Grease and alcohol DO NOT mix.  So, if you decide to make a late night Waffle House run, don’t order anything with too much grease or you’ll spend more time in the bathroom than in the booth eating.

5. Chocolate

Chocolate has caffeine which is a definite no-no with alcohol.  But also the cocoa and fat will also upset your stomach.  Put the candy bar down and run far far away!

6. Desserts that contain alcohol

The worst thing you can do when already drunk is top off your meal with a liquor-laced dessert where the alcohol hasn’t been baked or cooked off.  You’re asking for a level of intoxication that you aren’t prepared to handle.

7. Dairy

Indigestion.  Nuff said.  That means no cheese with that wine.

8. Soda

It further dehydrates you, much like salty foods.  AVOID.

9. Spicy foods or foods with hot sauce

These foods will upset your GI tract and cause the worst indigestion and heart burn you have ever had in your life.  I suggest you go for mild when drinking.

Now that you know what not to eat, feel free to avoid these foods for a good night out!  Foods to eat instead include popcorn, crackers, pancakes, waffles, rice, whole wheat toast, and bananas.  These will help to absorb some booze and keep you from feeling sick later.  Happy drinking!  Cheers.
