Ah, the drunk call. A call that seems to happen when someone has had just a few too many drinks and has spent way too much time monopolizing the conversation. This usually happens after something hurtful occurs and the person is out to drink away their frustration, but there are other types like professions of love or lust as well. Because of this, drunk calling is every bitter ex-girlfriend, damsel in distress, and begrudged employee’s nightmare. A drunk phone call can end a relationship, start a new one, and get you into a hole so deep there is no coming out. Here are a few tips to avoid making this dangerous mistake.

1. Give your phone to a friend. Tell them that no matter how much you ask for it, they should not give it to you until you have sobered up.

2. Put it in a place that isn’t obvious. Often, we are so tied up on our phones because they are in our hand, on our hip, in our pockets, or connected to a headset. Try putting your phone away in a place that doesn’t easily allow you to access it, like the glove compartment of the car. Just don’t forget where you put it. This is the whole ‘out of sight, out of mind’ theory.

3. Don’t drink. This one is pretty obvious. If you aren’t drunk, you can’t make a drunk call. Duh.

4. Learn to be honest. Often, drunk calling is repressed feelings. If you want to avoid someone knowing how you truly feel and reacting negatively, learn to be blunt. That way, there is nothing to hide.

5. Know your limit. This is slightly like #3, but allows you to still enjoy the wonders of alcohol. In moderation, of course.

6. Turn your phone off. Maybe if you are drunk enough, you will mistake it for being drained of the battery and abort the mission of trying to make a call.

7. Issue a disclaimer. When you meet people, just say, “I say the craziest things when drunk. Just ignore me haha.” Let me know if this works…

8. Don’t have the phone numbers of people you hate saved in your phone. If their information isn’t there and you don’t have it memorized, you can’t call them!

9. Go with a buddy to a drinking function. Maybe your friend can help you stay rational. Unless they are the type of friend to egg you on…don’t bring that friend.

And lastly,

10. Try focusing on the event happening! Why would you want to ruin your night, and possibly the next day, by making a phone call that could change everything?!
