What to Order at a Bar When You’re Not Sure

We have all been in the position where we just did not know what drink to order. Whether we want something new and just don’t know what to try, or we just stepped into a new bar, or we just want to be adventurous, sometimes, it is just way too hard to come up with a specific selection. There is, however, a method to combat this tragedy. Let me enlighten you.

Most of the time, our first instinct is to walk into a bar and ask the bartender what we should get. We say the infamous line “what is your favorite” or “what do you like” or “what’s the most popular drink here?” Well my fellow connoisseurs, do NOT do that. The fact of the matter is, this can lead to disaster.

You might just settle for something that you have had before. Your “usual” if you will. Don’t do this either. Be different! Try something! Be adventurous!

The first thing, is an obvious one but you would be surprised how many fail to practice it on both sides of the bar:
Ask for a drink menu if you don’t see one readily available. Forget trying to act like you are the king of all liquor knowledge, GET A MENU! Once you acquire said menu you will have to actually read. I know this may seem like something you stopped doing in grade school, but sometimes it is just plain necessary. While reading may be the last thing on your mind during a night on the town, I’m sure that enjoying a great drink will be well worth it. Pay special attention to the types of alcohol used (spot your favorites) and mix-ins used. Also, if prices are listed, you might want to pay attention to that as well. Sometimes alcohol tastes a whole lot better when you know it isn’t going to make you have to draft from your emergency savings.

Lastly, order! I personally like to order things that have really odd names that sound like there is some sort of fruit infused in them. But, if you’re not into Pink Panty Droppers or other drinks with crazy names, I suggest ordering a drink that you have never had, but that incorporates your favorite alcohol. Find one you like?
