Transitioning from College Drinking to Adult Drinking
Let’s face it, there are many things in college we did that we would like to just sweep under the rug and never speak of again. From hookups to parties to drunken nights that ended in hangovers so bad, you swore that you would never drink again, there are a lot of memories that, let’s face it, we wish we had been educated about before making. One of the most prominent memories is drinking.
In college, those wishing to indulge in a choice beverage usually do not go for quality or even taste. As a recent college graduate, I can attest to this fact. In college, drinking is about getting the highest proof for the cheapest price to ensure the drunkest state within the quickest time. Who cares if it tastes like you have just taken a shot of liquid drain unclogger? If you start feeling the buzz within 5 minutes, it was all worth it!
Unfortunately college students lack the refined palate of worldly adults, simply because they have not yet been introduced to such wonders.
As an adult, drinking excursions slowly change focus. Adults not only have more resources to be able to afford better alcohol, but they also have more refined tastes. Taste quickly becomes more important because, after all those years of college and slurping down horrid tasting things, adults have earned the right to better tasting drinks!
Additionally, if one is going to casually sip on something, it might as well taste delicious. In addition to better tasting drinks, adults, unlike college students, do not necessarily want to get drunk quickly. As a result, adults tend to have fewer drinks. Because of various responsibilities like having to get home, having a career, or having a family, many adults moderate their alcohol intake. Also, it doesn’t hurt that we newcomers to the ‘real world of adulthood’ are excited that we can now order alcohol legally.
When making the comparison, the conclusion is simple: college students are just being introduced to the wonders of alcoholic beverages, and thus, go overboard on partaking in drinking them. Whereas adults who are past college status have more refined taste and are more conscious of the effects that will result later.
