Apple Cider is often thought of as a late summer or early fall beverage, but there are some creative bars working to change that. What is a cider bar? A bar that puts cider first and is inspired by the producers and producing regions. There will be rows of taps that include an array of fresh, craft ciders, as well as bottled favorites. There are a few cider bars that are inspiring this year’s trend.

The Northman

The Northman is Chicago’s first cider bar. They take their inspiration from cider producing regions, offering an immersive experience. Establishments like this one are still pretty uncommon, but bars like The Northman are setting the standard for fall’s growing trend, cider centered bars. When you step inside, you’ll enjoy the balance of elegance and comfort, including wooden elements and cool tones.

Their apple cider list is extensive, offering far more ciders on tap than beers. Not to worry beer lovers, they also offer a rotating draft beer menu as well as bottled craft beer favorites. Their cider centered cocktail list is impressive and complex. The Northman offers something special in their Calvados, a delicious apple brandy produced in the Lower Normandy region of France. This part of the menu is extensive, so unless you are an expert, i’d suggest taking some direction from the bartender on which to choose. This local favorite is well loved for a reason. Their extensive drink menu is matched only by their fresh bistro style cuisine.

Wassail

Wassail is one of New York City’s most well know cider bars. They offer a series of apple cider centered cocktails as well as almost one hundred varieties of draft and bottled ciders. This industrial inspired spot brings to life our imaginary images of old timey cider producers. The taps stick out of the weathered steel wall, providing super cold, fresh apple ciders. Chat up the bartender for recommendations.

Some of the most notable cocktails include the ‘Hotel California’ which includes rum, matcha and apple cider or the ‘Little Red Corvette’ which blends apple brandy, coconut, pineapple and beet. Both the drink and food menus are updated seasonally, putting the best, freshest ingredients first. The cuisine includes American classics like bone-in rib eye and cold smoked duck breast. This one is a must see if you are in New York or visiting in the future.

If visiting Chicago or New York City is out of the question, seek out a liquor store to check out the newest blends and brands of cider that you can purchase to drink at home. Cider bars are surely a trend we’re hoping doesn’t fade anytime soon. Know of any other notable cider bars in a town near you? Drop us a line in the comments section to let us know.
