American Drinks That Foreigners Love!

Visitors do not come to America to see the statue of Liberty, the Golden Gate Bridge, or the Friendship Arch. They do not come to see the Grand Canyon, the Pacific Ocean, or Walt Disney World. No. They come it for one reason, and one reason only.

Drinks. Drinks that harken back to better days (OK, we both know the Prohibition era produced the best drink names), drinks that evoke strong American patriotism, drinks that signal: you are in America.

First things first, America’s beer is the realest. Do you want to know why? We have every beer imaginable. Even so, there are some standouts that prove American excellence: IPAs.

America leads the way in IPAs, and the votes are in: Portland and Denver are the favorites. Craft breweries have popped up in every city in America, and visitors to the states are enthralled with the number of choices when looking at IPAs. In fact, we have seen Irish defect from their warm Guinness faster than you can say boiled potato! 

Portland

So trendy. So Portland. If you go to The Hopworks Urban Brewery in Portland , order a pale ale by the name of the Pounder. This bestseller appeals to visitors for it’s citrus and pine flavors, and is hopped in the Kettle, hop-back and fermenter! Perfect for a night out, it will surely deliver the taste of America.

Colorado

Second to this is the TITAN IPA, with a malty sweetness and available year round. There are a number of different food pairings, which only enhances it’s diversity; it can be paired with grilled lamb burger, Thai green curry, roasted zucchini, sharp cheddar, or even carrot cake, making this delicious hop one of the greatest IPAS to emerge from Denver Colorado! I would go for the burger though– if you’re coming to America you might as well go all out.

Of course, it is impossible to ignore America’s contribution to wine culture too. From Napa Valley to the Columbia Valley in Washington, and even to the Hudson Valley in New York, America has no end of excellent wines. Foreigners love to check off wine bucket lists, trying wine from all over the country and picking a favorite from each of the largest regions. You could probably drink a bucket of these and still want more (don’t worry, I’m sure their serving sizes are American as well).

New York

From New York hails the Brimstone Hill Vineyard & Winery, which produces an excellent 2013 Chardonnay, an award-winning medalist with touches of citrus and a buttery finish.

Washington

The Columbia Crest Winery, located in Washington State’s shining glory is a Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, has a “dark fruit and plum scented bouquet with touches of smoke and espresso.” A stellar choice, this wine elicits the sort of response you’d think from one of the biggest wine producing areas in the United States.

California

Last, but certainly not least, Napa Valley holds the reigning title for wine production. Foreigners love the 2011 Pinotage from Steltzner Winery, the last remnants from their 2011 release. Paired best with spicy foods, this tends to lean toward more European visitors, but it has no limits!

We can’t leave out the spirits! Foreigners only have to drink one of these to feel as patriotic as we do.

Long Island Iced Tea

Do they have a Long Island in Serbia? No. surprisingly they typically mix vodka, with more vodka. Here in America, we mix several different types of alcohol together to make a drink instead of just one. So get out your tequila, vodka, light rum, triple sec, and gin. put 1/2 oz sour mix and 1 teaspoon of cola, and you have successfully made a Long Island Iced tea. Do you feel like you are on the banks of South Hampton yet?

Warning: it might be a little more than a teaspoon of cola, you might have to give it a tablespoon if you’re feeling generous.

Moscow Mule

Moscow Mules in Poland? Kourva, niet! They come here for the Moscow Mules. Why? because anything with Moscow isn’t popular these days. These delicious drinks are made with

• 1/2 ounce lime juice
• 2 ounces vodka
• 4 to 6 ounces ginger beer

Whip one of these up for yourself and you’ll be singing the National Anthem and waving the American flag in no time.
